Take a trip to Miami Art Musuem (MAM) to see a couple of interesting exhibitions that are currently running: A Flying Machine for Every Man, Woman and Child by Yinka Shonibare and Objects of Value, which includes the work shown above by Dario Escobar.
For a few more days, through to 18th January, you can see A Flying Machine for Every Man, Woman and Child by Yinka Shonibare (below), which combines Victorian clothing, African textiles, mannequins and, of course, flying machines to present a fantastical consideration of immigration and escape.
Running until February 22nd, Objects of Value is a group show that topically examines the determination of economic value, with work including You tried so hard to make us go away (below) by Wangechi Mutu.
As banks collapse worldwide, we know that prices are generally nothing more than expressions of confidence and that the notions of intrinsic value and worth are arbitrary and culture-specific; a fundamental truth that the art world is also reckoning with as work goes unsold and prices stop going up. This show looks particularly at the resonance that precious metals and gems have as indicators and stores of wealth, alongside the emotional and societal impacts of our desire to possess objects of value. An abundance of silver, crystal and cold hard cash fills the show, along with one diamond sadly lost forever. Energy and subtle thinking abound to create a thought provoking and scarily relevant exhibition.
Also showing at the Miami Art Museum through to January 25th is Moving Through Time and Space by Chantal Akerman, a hopelessly pretentious series of video installations that sees no cliche left unfilmed. You can save the journey up the stairs and give these affected vignettes a miss.
